Yes, McAfee SiteAdvisor stopped working!

It seems the latest McAfee add-on stopped working for Firefox 3.6. Here is how I fixed it.

Man Behind Laptop

Those of us who have been around the Internet for a while realize that some of the other inexperienced users may not know their way around as well as we do. Hence, the reason for McAfee SiteAdvisor.

McAfee SiteAdvisor is a free Firefox and IE add-on that protects new users from digging into the depths of the Internet and finding infested malware and spyware web sites.

The extension provides a red-yellow-green type of system where if a site is malicious, the SiteAdvisor extension will indicate the site is a malicious site. If yellow, proceed with caution, and if green, you can rest assured, you're browsing safely.

I remember a long time ago when I reviewed the extension and knew it had potential.

I'm sorry, I'm rambling...

The Problem

Ever since I installed the latest version of McAfee Total Internet Protection on my parent's laptop and netbook, they couldn't do anything with Firefox. It locked up on them. They couldn't access the URL, they couldn't click any buttons...nothing!

Solution

In my last post, I connected to my parents' computer using TeamViewer. After connecting, I realized that it was the McAfee SiteAdvisor causing the problem.

I immediately went into Firefox Safe Mode and disabled McAfee SiteAdvisor...for now.

I noticed that some other users were having the same issues as my parents over at CNet and even on McAfee's web site (IE only, though).

I did find a possible solution over at BleepingComputer.com.

I'm hoping that this post helps other users who are having similar issues.
