What are the default HTML settings for Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)?
Designers are using baseline, or "reset," style sheets more and more to clear out the existing settings of default styles in the browsers to create a more uniform way of designing web pages.
After looking at some recent polls about "Which CSS Reset do you use?", I thought about this in a different way.
Recently, I've been working on a project where I wanted all OL/UL tags to display a certain way throughout the entire pages, but at one section, I need the tags to display normally as if the CSS wasn't there.
Granted, it's great to have a reset.css at the front of your style sheets to create a more compatible web page, but what if we went in the other direction and wanted to know the default settings of CSS?
Luckily, the W3C already made an appendix of these default settings with the Default Style Sheet for HTML 4. After looking over these settings, it seems that most of them make sense and could be copied into a default.css to put everything back the way it was.
Additionally, here is a list of reset style sheets if your are interested in create purely CSS-based web sites:
- Eric Meyer's Reset Reloaded
- Yahoo!'s Reset CSS
- The Montoya Herald - CSS Techniques I use all the time.
Are there any other baseline CSS files out there that I missed?
